Reading Challenge

In 2016, I told you about how I was setting a goal to read more books in 2016. That year I set a goal of reading 40 books.  I used the reading challenge tracker on www.goodreads.com and the POPSUGAR reading challenge categories (click here for the 2019 POPSUGAR categories).  I also created a Facebook Group called Friends Across the Pages to share my challenge with my friends and their friends.

While I did not finish all the categories that year, I did finish 54 books.  Since I had only read 7 in 2015, I was thrilled with the results!  I followed that up by reading 70 books in 2017 and I am at 116 so far for 2018.

I have also found some other great reading challenges if the POPSUGAR one is not your cup of tea.

  • Mount TBR Reading Challenge (tiered challenge based on reading the books you already own).  I track these in a Goodreads shelf and typically clear out between 12 and 24 of the books I already own.
  • Modern Mrs. Darcy 2019 Reading Challenge (a great 12-book challenge for this that want to read about a book a month). I LOVE these categories.  It is simple but will help you expand your comfort zone with books.
  • Around the Year in 52 Books (for those wanting to read a book a week).  This is a group in Goodreads.  Join them and check out the categories for 2019.
My goal for 2019 is to read 85 books.  (I know this is actually a decrease from 2018.  I had a lot of forced downtime in 2018 that I spent reading.  I am hoping that won’t be the case in 2019.). My 7-year old son set my goal (as well as his of 120), but at around 7 books a month, it is a good pace for me.  This will be the first full year he is reading and that we are doing the challenge together. In addition, I have bought reading journals for us both to record our books and our thoughts around them in addition to tracking them on Goodreads.

Do you set an annual reading goal?  Do you have a reading challenge you love?
