Books

Nine days into 2019 and I have completed 7 books towards my goal of 85. Six of those were from the How to Train Your Dragon Series with my son, so he is 6 into his goal of 120.  I have three I am reading for me now but am catching free moments rather than having extended reading time. I don’t really like snow, but a snow day on a weekend might be just the thing I need.

Tonight we started the seventh book in the How to Train Your Dragon series.  My son saw a trailer for the new Dragon movie just about the time we were looking for a new audiobook series to start.  (We listen to books instead of the radio in the car.)  We came home and watched the first two Dragon movies, and then I told him there was a book series, too.  And we were off.  The books are different than the movies, which is great.  But in a phrase I rarely ever say, I like Toothless the dragon better in the movies.  The book dragon entertains me more, but he is a little snarky and talks back which makes the mom in me cringe.  We talk about the differences between the books and the movies and my son has some really good insights.  I got him a book journal, too, so it is fun to see what he documents about each book.

Janet Chapman’s  Courting Carolina is on my Nook app on my iPad and is the book I read before bed.  I have read all of her Maine/magic series and truly love them.  When I saw the 2019 POPSUGAR challenge category for “a book that makes you nostalgic” I picked the first book in the Spellbound Falls series because they were all on my Nook app.  (Some of the earlier books I had read in paperback and don’t have anymore.).  I initially read these at a very different point in my life, a much simpler time.  And I really wanted to recapture that if only for a few stolen minutes a day.  I finished the first book in December and so I officially read the second book in the series for the 2019 challenge.  Courting Carolina is the third and is bringing me as much joy as the first two.

A friend recommended Hazards of Time Travel so I downloaded it on audible.com.  I listen to it in the car when I am alone.  I don’t have a lot of alone time in the car, but it is fun to dive into an alternate reality in those times.  I may or may not have sat in my car in the parking lot to finish a chapter.  It is different than my normal book but I am enjoying it.  I al

I definitely have my go-to categories but the thing I loved about the POPSUGAR challenge the past few years is exploring books outside my norm.  Station Eleven was one of the first books I read just to fit a challenge category.  (I usually just fit the books I want to read in.) I really liked it and this reminds me of it in some ways.

I always have one professional development book on audible.  I use this for when I am doing detailed but repetitive work at my job.  We have an open floor plan and I am easily distracted.  So, when I need to buckle down, I put something like this in.  I usually have the professional development books in hardback or e-Book, too, and can make notes or mark pages that I want to go back to.  A couple of friends and I are reading this together in January, and then discussing it.  I have the hardback ready to go as soon as I have gotten through the audio version.  So far, my favorite piece of it is on how to respond to feedback, but there are a lot of really useful observations in it.  The tips and suggestions can be put into practice right away.  I have already recommended the book to a few other people.

I usually have an ebook on my phone, too as the nook app doesn’t always sync the pages correctly.  I use that for when I have lunch alone.  I haven’t done that yet this year, so I just haven’t picked a new book yet.  I like having different books for different parts of my day. I love looking forward to some of the otherwise mundane parts of my life because I get to find out what happens next!

Are you a “one book at a time” person or do you like a buffet like I do?
